Day 1: Arrival and First Tastes

Our adventure began on a crisp Sunday afternoon as we arrived in Banff. We checked into the stunning Rimrock Resort Hotel, perched on the slopes of Sulphur Mountain. The panoramic views of the Bow Valley from our room immediately set the tone for our mountain escape. (See above!)

For dinner, we ventured into town to The Bison Restaurant & Terrace. This farm-to-table gem offered a true taste of Alberta, with locally sourced ingredients and a warm, rustic ambiance. The bison short ribs were a standout, perfectly capturing the essence of Rocky Mountain cuisine.

Day 2: Lakes, Canyons, and Night Skies

We kicked off our first full day with an early morning trip to Johnston Canyon. The walk along the canyon's suspended catwalks, with the rushing water below, was both thrilling and beautiful. The reward? Stunning views of the lower and upper falls.

Next, we drove to the iconic Lake Louise. Even in photos, nothing prepares you for the mesmerizing turquoise waters set against snow-capped peaks. We spent time simply soaking in the view and enjoying a leisurely walk along the lakeshore.

In the afternoon, we explored Lake Minnewanka, the largest lake in Banff National Park. The serene beauty of this glacial lake, surrounded by towering mountains, was the perfect backdrop for some quiet reflection.

But the real magic happened after sunset. We returned to Lake Minnewanka late in the evening and were treated to a mesmerizing display of the Northern Lights. Watching the ethereal green lights dance across the night sky, reflected in the still waters of the lake, was an unexpected and unforgettable highlight of our trip.

We ended our action-packed day with a delightful dinner at the charming Bluebird restaurant. Their fresh, locally-inspired menu was the perfect way to refuel after our day of adventures and celestial wonders.

Day 3: Town Explorations and Farewell

On our final day, we started with a visit to Bow Falls, a wide waterfall on the Bow River. The short hike to the viewpoint offered a perfect morning stretch and some great photo opportunities.

Next, we discovered why they call it Surprise Corner. This viewpoint lives up to its name, offering a sudden and spectacular view of the Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel against the backdrop of Sulphur Mountain.

For lunch, we ascended the Banff Gondola to dine at Sky Bistro, perched at 7,510 feet. The sweeping views of six mountain ranges from the summit of Sulphur Mountain were breathtaking, providing a spectacular backdrop to our meal.

We spent our last afternoon exploring the charming town of Banff, popping into local shops and galleries, and savoring our final tastes of mountain life.

The Verdict

Three days in Banff felt like stepping into a postcard. From the majestic landscapes to the vibrant local culture and cuisine, every moment was filled with wonder. The unexpected bonus of witnessing the Northern Lights added an extra touch of magic to our trip. While we managed to see many highlights, Banff's magic left us eager to return and explore more.

Whether you're an outdoor enthusiast, a foodie, or simply in need of a mountain escape, Banff offers something for everyone. Just be warned – once you've experienced Banff's beauty, you might find yourself planning your next visit before you've even left!
