Highlights of My 10 Days in Thailand

The morning routine feels familiar yet strange: coffee in hand, Chicago traffic humming below, winter sun struggling through clouds. But my mind is still 8,000 miles away, where just days ago, my husband and I were navigating Bangkok's temple-lined streets with Thai iced teas in hand and later, watching the sun paint Koh Samui's waters gold. They say travel changes you. What they don't tell you is how it ruins your morning coffee – in the best possible way.

Bangkok: A City of Contrasts

After a long journey with multiple flights and an 8-hour layover in Paris (pro tip: the airport lounges are a lifesaver for long layovers!), we finally arrived in Bangkok on Monday morning. The city immediately engulfed us in its unique energy – a fascinating blend of ancient traditions and modern innovations.

Must-See Temples and Palaces

With our wonderful guide Ur, we explored Bangkok's magnificent temples. The Temple of Dawn (Wat Arun) captivated us with its intricate porcelain designs, while the Reclining Buddha at Wat Pho left us in awe of its sheer scale. The Grand Palace complex, with its gleaming golden spires and the Queen's Silk Museum, offered a glimpse into Thailand's royal heritage.

Canal Tours and Markets

Don't miss taking a canal tour on one of the thin long-tail boats that navigate Bangkok's waterways. We discovered an artist village and visited the impressive Buddha statues along the route. The flower market was another highlight – a kaleidoscope of colors and fragrances that awakened all our senses.

Cultural Performances

We caught a performance of the Thai epic featuring Hanuman and Rama at the Grand Theatre – the elaborate costumes and choreography were spectacular, offering insight into Thailand's rich mythological traditions.

Culinary Adventures

Bangkok's food scene is unparalleled. From food courts in local markets to a Michelin-starred dinner at Supanniga Eating Room (try Grandpa's Pad Pu with crab meat!), every meal was a discovery. The highlight was definitely our 15-course Chinatown food tour, where we sampled everything from fish cakes and green curry to dark soy ice cream and mango sticky rice.

Hidden Gems

Don't overlook Bangkok's thriving speakeasy scene. We loved The Rabbit Hole, where we tried creative cocktails like The Beijing and Lisbon. The 008 hotel speakeasy was another great find for nightcaps.

Koh Samui: Island Paradise

After the sensory overload of Bangkok, Koh Samui offered the perfect balance with its laid-back luxury and natural beauty.

Beach Relaxation

Our resort welcomed us with coconut waters, leis, and a special honeymoon setup complete with flower petals and wine. Days spent lounging on the beach, kayaking, and paddleboarding were exactly what we needed to recharge.

Island Exploration

One of our favorite experiences was touring the island by 4x4 with our guide, Aussie Chris. We reached the highest point on the island at a temple with breathtaking views, visited a waterfall, and enjoyed lunch at a mountain-top cafe.

Sunset Cocktails

The sunsets in Koh Samui are truly magical. Cape Away beach bar became our favorite spot to watch the sky transform while sipping cocktails, followed by a short walk to Mimosa Resort for more drinks as the stars came out.

Wellness and Relaxation

Our resort offered morning yoga at the Sky Deck – the perfect way to start the day with panoramic views. And don't miss getting a couples massage – the Thai masseuses work magic on travel-weary muscles.

Travel Tips

1. Lounges are worth it: For long-haul flights and layovers, airport lounges make a huge difference. We used Amex access and were grateful for showers during our Brussels layover.

2. Transportation: In Bangkok, the combination of sky train, subway, and Grab (Southeast Asia's Uber) makes getting around easy. In Koh Samui, consider renting a vehicle for at least a day to explore the island.

3. Pack light but smart: Thailand's climate is hot and humid. Light, breathable clothing is essential, but bring a light layer for heavily air-conditioned malls and restaurants.

4. Hydration: The Thai sun is intense. Stay hydrated, but maybe skip the Hong Thong whiskey – not all Thai spirits are created equal!

5. Late checkout: If you have an evening flight, request a late checkout. Many resorts are accommodating, and it gave us extra beach time on our final day.
